Two brothers feared drowned while swimming in Sungai Paka
DUNGUN: A swimming outing for four teenagers in Sungai Paka near Kampung Beril turned tragic when two of them, who are brothers, were feared drowned about 11am today.
The victims were identified as Mohamad Amir Ashraf Mohd Zulnaidi, 15, and Mohd Aidil Amsar Mohd Zulnaidi, 14, students of SMKA Durian Guling, Marang and SMK Paka, Dungun respectively.
According to an initial report from the Fire and Rescue Department, an emergency call was received at 11.19am before fire engines from the Paka Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene six minutes later.
Operations commander Mohd Rizuan Ramli said the incident involved four teenage boys who had gone to the river to swim about 10.30am.
“Two of the victims managed to save themselves, while the other two are believed to have gone missing in the river. Search operations are actively ongoing,” he said.
The two survivors were identified as Mohd Farish Iqbal Cik Mohana Runasdi, 14, from SMK Paka, and Mohd Afi Naashif Adli Noone, 15.
A search and rescue (SAR) operation involving 15 personnel from the Paka Fire and Rescue Station, with assistance from the Kerteh station and the water rescue team (PPDA) from Chukai, has been activated.
Fire and rescue teams are conducting searches along the riverbanks, while the two who are brothers, were feared drowned about 11am today. Divers have also been deployed to locate the missing victims.
As of now, the operation is still ongoing and further updates will be provided.
