UK-EU summit thrown into uncertainty after rejoin calls from leadership rivals
Sir Keir Starmer’s plans to reintegrate with the EU have been thrown into doubt ahead of a crucial summit this summer following calls to rejoin the bloc, it has been reported.
Leadership hopeful, Wes Streeting, announced that Brexit had been “catastrophic mistake” and that the UK’s future lies within the EU as he unveiled his bid to become the next prime minister.. Andy Burnham, who hopes to win the Makerfield by-election before mounting his own bid, said he would like Britain to rejoin the EU “in my lifetime”.
Due to the calls, on British official said that despite the summit going ahead in July, EU members have now been left confused by the UK’s position.
“It would be wrong to say that some member states haven’t been confused about our position. The ‘rejoin’ question has added to an air of confusion . . . It’s not where we are and the debate reflects badly on the UK as a whole,” one told the Financial Times said.
“Let us know when there’s an actual policy,” said one EU diplomat. “We’ve got a few too many existential problems on our hands to be dealing with the day-to-day chicanery of UK politics.”
