WCE braces for 150,000 daily vehicles during festive rush
WEST Coast Expressway (WCE) expects traffic volume to exceed 150,000 vehicles daily during peak festive travel days as balik kampung movement and holiday travel intensify.
To ensure smoother traffic flow, WCE said all construction and maintenance works involving lane closures along the highway will be temporarily suspended throughout the festive period, except for emergency works.
The company will also position tow trucks at strategic locations along the highway while strengthening its Emergency Response Team (ERT) and patrol units to provide continuous 24-hour assistance.
These measures are aimed at enabling faster response to road incidents while minimising disruptions to traffic flow.
WCE also urged motorists to make use of its mobile application, which offers real-time traffic updates, route navigation and information on facilities such as EV charging stations, motorcycle shelters and emergency telephones.
The application also features Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered assistance and CCTV monitoring to help users check current traffic conditions before starting their journeys.
In addition, WCE has fully implemented the Touch ‘n Go PayDirect system across all toll plazas, allowing toll charges to be deducted directly from users’ e-wallet balances without requiring manual card reloads.
To improve travel comfort, the highway operator continues to provide six rest and service Areas (R&R) equipped with parking facilities, surau and restrooms.
Food stalls are available at selected locations including Sungai Nyior R&R and Bukit Kapar R&R, while laybys with basic facilities are available at every toll plaza.
WCE Highway managing director Lyndon Alfred Felix advised motorists to plan their journeys carefully and prioritise safety throughout the high-traffic festive period.
He reminded motorists to ensure vehicles are roadworthy, maintain safe driving distances, wear seat belts, monitor e-wallet and Touch ‘n Go balances and take sufficient breaks to avoid fatigue and micro-sleep during long-distance travel.
