‘We need the president’: Perak PKR urges Anwar to defend Tambun in next general election

Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 — Perak PKR has reportedly asked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to defend Tambun in the next general election, saying his presence remains important to the party’s campaign in the state.

However, Perak PKR chairman Mohamad Hairul Amir Sabri said there had been no discussion so far on whether Anwar would switch seats, according to a report in The Star.

“We in Perak very much need the president to remain in Perak to help us win more parliamentary and state seats in the next election,” he was quoted as saying.

He reportedly said it was too early to determine Anwar’s final choice, as the PKR president usually makes decisions on seats only two or three months before an election.

The remarks come amid renewed early election talk, with Melaka and Johor due to face state elections before GE16, as well as political uncertainty in several states.

In Negeri Sembilan, 14 Umno assemblymen have declared that they had lost confidence in Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, while Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah has reportedly said the state assembly would be dissolved if PAS representatives table a no-confidence motion against him in June.

There has also been social media speculation that Anwar may not defend Tambun in the next general election.

The speculation follows recent political developments in PKR, including the resignations of former deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and former vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who also vacated their Pandan and Setiawangsa parliamentary seats respectively.

Anwar yesterday took over Pandan as an adopted constituency, with Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz named as its monitoring officer.
