Wike Faults 2027 Jonathan Comeback Speculation

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed speculation over a possible return of former President Goodluck Jonathan to the 2027 presidential race, saying no politician is compelled by public sentiment to contest elections.

Wike made the remarks during his monthly media parley in Abuja on Monday, while responding to questions on growing political discussions suggesting that Jonathan could be preparing for a comeback in the 2027 general elections.

He said political ambition is usually initiated by individuals themselves, noting that supporters only mobilise after an aspirant has shown clear interest in contesting.

According to him, it is misleading to assume that people are “drafted” into elections purely because of public demand, stressing that serious political contests begin with a clear indication of intent.

“You don’t go and bring somebody to run… it is either you have shown signal that you are interested,” he said.

Wike added that claims of widespread public pressure forcing individuals to contest are often exaggerated, insisting that no one enters a presidential race without first signaling willingness to participate.

“Nobody is sleeping inside and people will say come and run for an election,” he said.

Addressing questions specifically on Jonathan, Wike said the former president has not publicly declared any interest in the 2027 race.

“Did Jonathan ever express interest? He’s a former President and people should respect him,” he said.

He cautioned against relying on speculation or assumptions about political intentions, noting that public debates should be based on clear declarations rather than rumours or perceived “body language.”
