“غوغل” متهمة بـ”قتل” غابة بحجم 500 ملعب كرة قدم لبناء مراكز بياناتها

تواجه شركة غوغل انتقادات حادة بسبب إزالة غطاء نباتي يمتد لأكثر من 300 هكتار -أي ما يعادل مساحة تقارب 500 ملعب كرة قدم- لإنشاء مركزين جديدين للبيانات في شمال فنلندا، وذلك دون استكمال التقييمات البيئية اللازمة، بحسب ما أوردته صحيفة “كاليفا” الفنلندية الشهر الماضي.

ورغم أن عمليات التقييم لا تزال جارية، فقد بدأ المقاولون المتعاقدون مع عملاق التكنولوجيا بالفعل في إزالة الأشجار من المنطقة قبل أشهر، مما أثار قلق “الجمعية الفنلندية للحفاظ على الطبيعة”.

وقالت هانا هالمينبا، رئيسة الجمعية: “إما أن هذا يعكس عدم كفاءة صارخة من جانب شركة المشروع التابعة لغوغل في فنلندا (Tuike Finland Oy)، أو استخفافًا جسيمًا بالتشريعات الفنلندية، أو -في أسوأ الأحوال- كلا الأمرين معًا”، بحسب ما نقله تقرير لموقع “فيوتشريزم” المتخصص في أخبار التكنولوجيا والعلوم، اطلعت عليه “العربية Business”.

وتُظهر صور الأقمار الصناعية تجريف أربعة مواقع منفصلة تمهيدًا لبناء مركزي البيانات الجديدين.

وتؤكد “غوغل” أن قطع الأشجار استوفى متطلبات قانون الغابات في البلاد، وأنها أكملت تقييمات بيئية موسعة.

ومع ذلك، طلبت جمعية الحفاظ على الطبيعة الفنلندية منذ ذلك الحين من الجهات التنظيمية الفنلندية تعليق الأنشطة إلى حين استكمال التقييمات البيئية الجارية.

وقالت هالمينبا إنها تشعر بالقلق من احتمال تأثر أنواع الطيور المحلية بإزالة الأشجار من المنطقة. كما تمثل الغابة رابطًا بيئيًا مهمًا يسمح للحيوانات بالانتقال من موطن طبيعي إلى آخر.

ويسلط الحادث الضوء على النمو الهائل في مشروعات مراكز بيانات الذكاء الاصطناعي الجديدة حول العالم، وهو توسع كبير في البنية التحتية قد يكون له تأثير كبير على البيئة المحلية.

وفي الوقت نفسه، تأمل “غوغل” في استرضاء الحكومة الفنلندية بعد اختيارها البلاد لتنفيذ أكبر استثمار منفرد للشركة في القارة، بقيمة تصل إلى 15 مليار دولار.
