10 things Nigerians should know to prevent Ebola infection

Back

By Chioma Obinna

  1. Wash your hands regularly with soap and clean water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers, especially after touching public surfaces or caring for sick people.
  2. Avoid direct contact with blood and body fluids such as saliva, sweat, vomit, urine, or feces from anyone showing symptoms of illness.
  3. Do not handle dead bodies or participate in unsafe burial practices without proper protective measures and trained health officials.
  4. Avoid bush meat and contact with wild animals, especially fruit bats and monkeys, which can carry the Ebola virus.
  5. Be alert for symptoms such as sudden fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, and unexplained bleeding.
  6. Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear after recent travel or contact with a suspected Ebola patient.
  7. Do not self-medicate or hide symptoms, as early detection and isolation are critical to preventing spread.
  8. Avoid spreading false information or panic by relying only on updates from health authorities and verified news sources.
  9. Cooperate with health officials during contact tracing and screening at airports, borders, hospitals, and communities.
  10. Keep your environment clean and practice good hygiene, including regular disinfection of frequently touched surfaces.

Physicians under the Academy of Medical Sciences of Nigeria say vigilance, early reporting, and public cooperation remain Nigeria’s strongest defense against any possible Ebola outbreak.
