2 factories, workers’ hostel destroyed in Juru fire
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Two factories and a workers’ hostel were destroyed in a fire at Lorong Industri Ringan 4, Juru Light Industrial Area, here last night.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) John Sagun Francis said firefighters rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 8.25pm, adding that no casualties were reported in the incident.
“The blaze involved two adjoining double-storey factory units used for the production of health beverages and kitchen cabinets, with each unit covering an estimated 464.515sqm.
“A workers’ hostel measuring about 55.74sqm was also destroyed in the fire,” he said in a statement today.
He said all eight people in the factories and hostel escaped safely.
The fire was fully extinguished at 10.22pm, while the operation ended about two hours later after firefighters ensured there were no remaining embers or risk of the fire spreading further.
A total of 30 firefighters from three fire and rescue stations were involved in the operation, assisted by over 100 members from 17 volunteer fire brigades.
