29 undocumented migrants charged with immigration offences in Pasir Mas

PASIR MAS: Seven women were among 29 undocumented migrants charged at the Sessions Court here today with various immigration offences.

No pleas were recorded from the accused, aged between 19 and 61.

The accused comprised 19 Thai nationals, seven Myanmar men, two Indonesians and one Bangladeshi man.

Fourteen of them were charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for entering the country without valid travel documents.

Seven others were charged under Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for misuse of passes.

Six were charged under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for overstaying.

Two migrants were also charged under Section 56(1)(l) of the Immigration Act for possessing fake immigration stamps.

The seven women, comprising six Thai nationals and one Indonesian, were charged with offences involving overstaying, illegal entry and misuse of social visit passes by allegedly working at eateries.

The migrants were detained in separate operations conducted on May 12, 14 and 15 at several locations in Kota Baru, Tumpat and Tanah Merah.

The court fixed June 7 for mention, submission of case facts and sentencing.

Malaysia continues to attract foreign workers due to strong demand for labour in sectors such as services, construction and plantations, contributing to the presence of undocumented migrants in the country.
