3 killed, 1 injured in lifeboat drill mishap at oil rig

KUALA TERENGGANU: Three men were killed and another injured in an accident during an emergency evacuation drill using a lifeboat at an oil rig off the Terengganu-Pahang coast today.

Sources said the incident occurred around noon when all the victims were in an enclosed lifeboat and the cables supporting the craft suddenly snapped.

The lifeboat then fell more than 3m.

All four men were rushed from the oil rig to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ), but three of them were pronounced dead by the time they reached the hospital’s emergency department.

They were identified as Muhammad Faezuan Hakim Mohammad Bustaman, 28; Ahmad Fikri Zakaria, 38; and, Nik Muhammad Hafifi Asri Ab Majid, 37.

The fourth, Muhammad Taufik Mohd Ruslan, 36, from Ipoh, initially received treatment at the emergency department of Sultan Zainal Abidin Hospital before being transferred to HSNZ.

He is reported to be in stable condition but is under constant monitoring by the HSNZ medical team.

Sources said the cause of the accident is still being investigated.

Efforts have been made to get the oil rig company and the authorities for comment and official confirmation.
