Tom Barrack appointed as US envoy to Iraq
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – US President Donald Trump selected Tom Barrack as special presidential envoy to Iraq on Sunday while maintaining his duties as special presidential envoy to Syria and keeping his position as US ambassador to Turkey.
The step follows the end of Barrack’s mandate as an envoy to Syria.
Trump said in a statement that Barrack would be designated Special Presidential Envoy to Syria and, similarly, Special Presidential Envoy to Iraq, as part of strategic engagement with the governments in the two countries.
Trump said that Barrack will continue to be ambassador to Turkey, praising his dedication and ongoing commitment to serving the United States.
The step took place a day after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Barrack’s assignment as special envoy to Syria formally ended on Friday but that he will continue to play a major role in both Iraq and Syria.
Barrack’s appointment follows Mark Savaya’s brief time as special envoy to Iraq, which ended for unexplained reasons.
