AI a boon, not threat, says Finas chief
THE creative industry should view artificial intelligence (AI) as a powerful tool to streamline production rather than a threat to livelihoods.
National Film Development Corporation (Finas) chairman Datuk Hans Isaac emphasised that AI is not here to replace human talent, as the technology still relies on the expertise of creative individuals.
He said integrating AI into filmmaking could significantly shorten shooting schedules, leading to substantial savings in production costs.
“Some industry players are fearful of AI because they believe it will steal their jobs.
“However, AI still requires creative minds and industry experts. The difference is that a shoot which previously took 100 days can now be condensed into 60 days.”
He further noted that financial savings from shorter timelines could be reinvested to improve crew wages.
“When costs are reduced, the surplus budget can be channelled into increasing the salaries of production workers. That is how we want to help the industry.”
The announcement was made during a recent collaborative event between Finas and TikTok Malaysia.
Present was Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
The event marked a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s digital content ecosystem.
Additionally, Fahmi announced the RM5 million Madani Generation Catalyst Fund.
Welcomed by Finas, the fund will be accessible to eligible local companies and youth organisations, covering five core production categories: telemovies, documentaries, short films, short documentaries and animation.
