Bersatu man rubbishes talk of working with PH again

PETALING JAYA: A Bersatu leader has rubbished rumours that the party is considering working with Pakatan Harapan (PH) again, as PAS reviews its relationship with the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party.

Bersatu Youth information chief Harris Idaham Rashid insisted that the party remained consistent in refusing to work with PH, which includes DAP.

Harris said there were currently no plans for Bersatu to work with PH again, Utusan Malaysia reported.

“Bersatu is focused on working with PAS, Gerakan, the Malaysian Indian People’s Party, and Ikatin Prihatin Rakyat (IPR) to strengthen Perikatan Nasional (PN) ahead of the next general election.

“Our main goal is to ensure that PN obtains a simple majority of 112 seats to form the government. However, if we fail to reach that figure, the PN leadership will determine the best post-election pact.

“Right now, the party’s stand is clear: we do not want to work with DAP,” he was quoted as saying.

On Sunday, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook reportedly dismissed rumours of Bersatu rejoining PH in the wake of a tiff with PAS.

Loke said these were only rumours and that Bersatu had betrayed PH in the past.

Bersatu used to be a PH component but played a key role in the Sheraton Move which culminated in the collapse of the PH-led government in February 2020.

Last week, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang announced that the Islamic party was reassessing its ties with Bersatu with a view of possibly contesting the next general election without its PN ally.

He cited several issues that strained relations, including the change of Perlis menteri besar and Bersatu’s opposition to admitting new Malay-Muslim parties into PN, warning that “patience has its limits”.

Muhyiddin has also formed the loose IPR coalition, which includes all four PN components as well as parties like Pejuang, Putra, Berjasa, Urimai, and the Malaysian Advancement Party.
