Blast kills 3 counter-terrorism forces in northern Iraq
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – An ISIS bomb exploded during a search operation in northwest Iraq’s Nineveh province on Sunday, killing three Iraqi counterterrorism troops and injuring four others.
According to the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS), the incident took place in a desert area where forces were conducting field sweeps to hunt ISIS remnants.
The blast occurred a day after Iraqi troops killed four ISIS militants and destroyed a hideout during a military operation in the al-Shay Valley in the northern Iraqi province of Kirkuk.
The military operation in Kirkuk was launched by Iraqi F-16 fighter jets. The airstrike killed three terrorists and destroyed their hiding place, while the Iraqi Army Aviation Command (IAAC) tracked down and killed a fourth suspect during a reconnaissance mission later.
In 2014, the terrorist group ISIS took control of large areas in Iraq and Syria before being defeated in 2017.
Over five million Iraqis had to flee the provinces of Nineveh, Salah al-Din, Diyala, Anbar, and parts of Kirkuk because of ISIS control over these areas in 2014.
Iraq announced in late 2017 the liberation of all its territories from the grip of ISIS, but the authorities are constantly launching security operations to pursue remnants of the terrorist group.
