Bridgetown Port pulls back the curtain for open day
Members of the public were given a rare opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of the Barbados Port as it opened its gates for a behind-the-scenes look at daily maritime operations during its highly anticipated Port Open Day.
On Saturday, visitors were given unprecedented access to restricted areas, specialised machinery, and active vessels.
Divisional Manager of Business Development and Strategy Jane Broome said the event was designed to bridge the gap between the facility and the local community.
“Port Open Day is really where we offer the community the opportunity to come in and see the port at work,” Broome said. “It is always quite a bit of a mystery for the general public who don’t get through the main gates or a chance to see the port actually at work.”
The open day featured live demonstrations and interactive tours hosted by multiple agencies operating within the port’s perimeter.
Attendees were treated to exclusive naval vessel tours hosted by the Barbados Coast Guard, giving the public a firsthand look at defense and patrol craft. Various port departments offered up-close exhibitions of massive cargo-handling machinery and container lifters.
To round out the experience, marine services provided guided tours of the port’s vital tugboats, led by the captains who navigate them.
Broome said the event’s success relied heavily on cooperation across different sectors, highlighting the seamless involvement of security services, marine departments, and emergency responders.
“It’s a partnership with the other agencies that operate within the port,” Broome explained. “We have our counterparts from the Barbados Coast Guard offering vessel tours. We have the Bridgetown Port Fire Station offering tours of the fire station, and we’re showcasing some of the departments that work.”
For the hundreds of residents who attended, the day provided a unique perspective on the island’s economic lifeline, transforming a high-security zone into an educational playground for families and maritime enthusiasts alike.
