The first episode of Dear England has finally aired on BBC One, giving fans a chance to reminisce on one of the nation’s golden periods of football.

Adapted from the award-winning play of the same name by James Graham, the four-part series charts the journey of Gareth Southgate, played by Joseph Fiennes, as manager.

Speaking to Metro, Joseph shed light on the ‘nerve-wracking’ experience of playing the former England manager.

The show’s writer also declared that he wants to ‘defend’ Gareth in his drama series.

But, with many of the original stage cast reprising their roles from the play, viewers will be sure to have an opinion on which actors have been cast as their football lookalikes.

So, from the likes of Harry Kane to Harry Maguire and Jordan Pickford, what do you make of these side-by-side comparisons for the cast of Dear England?

Gareth Southgate

Dear England’s central character is, of course, none other than former England manager Gareth.

The series attempts to explore his unconventional approach to getting the best out of his players.

But, with the pair next to each other here, Shakespeare in Love star Joseph looks nearly identical.

Harry Kane

Will Antenbring is one of many who reprise their role from the stage play (Picture: BBC/Getty)

Next up is England’s captain Harry Kane, who is played by Will Antenbring.

The Bayern Munich striker is the nation’s top goalscorer and could well be England’s key to winning the World Cup this year.

Actor Will definitely looks the part here as well.

Harry Maguire

Adam Hugill, who plays Harry Maguire, spoke to the Metro about transforming into the Manchester United defender.

The actor explained how having to train to play football was ‘hell’.

But he did admit that playing the central defender made him appreciate how difficult footballers’ lives are and how much pressure they’re under.

Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier

Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier were two key players early in Gareth’s managerial career.

In the BBC’s Dear England series, David Shields plays Brentford star Jordan.

Meanwhile, Hamish Frew stars as the former Spurs player Eric.

Jordan Pickford

Speaking to Metro, Josh Barrow explained how Jordan Pickford is naturally a ‘theatrical’ person.

The Hostage actor also said he had to tone down his expressions for the TV series.

Next to each other here, the casting directors certainly look as though they nailed this character.

Pippa Grange

Jodie Whittaker stars as Pippa Grange in the four-part series (Picture: BBC/Getty)

Another central figure in Gareth’s reign as England manager was Pippa Grange.

Hired as the team’s psychologist, Pippa helped England overcome their penalty woes.

Playing the psychologist, Jodie Whittaker looks extremely similar here.

The first episode of Dear England airs at 9pm on Sunday, May 24.
