From Kibuli slums to big dreams
For many young Ugandans, success begins as a distant dream shaped by ambition but limited by circumstance.
For Reagan Tumusiime Gibril, that dream started in the crowded slums of Kibuli and found new direction through an opportunity offered by Equity Bank Uganda.
Tumusiime, a student from God Cares High School in Wakiso District, is among the beneficiaries of the Equity Leaders Program (ELP), the bank’s flagship education and leadership initiative designed for academically talented young people with leadership potential.
Born in Fort Portal, Tumusiime grew up in Kibuli under the care of his single mother. Like many children adjusting to a new environment, he initially struggled to fit in at school. He was self-conscious about his accent and limited command of English, often fearing ridicule from classmates.
But his life took an unexpected turn in Primary Four, while walking through his neighbourhood, Tumusiime stumbled upon an old broken laptop abandoned by the roadside.
Where others saw useless waste, he saw possibility. Driven by curiosity, he carried the damaged device home and attempted to power it using spare batteries. Against all odds, the screen flickered to life. That moment became a turning point.
“It changed something in me,” he recalls.
The once-shy boy from Kibuli suddenly found himself captivated by technology. The broken laptop ignited a passion that would later shape his career ambitions and personal goals.
From that day, Tumusiime committed himself to his studies with renewed focus, determined to one day become a computer engineer. By Senior Six, Tumusiime had evolved from a timid student worried about fitting in, to a focused young scholar with a clear vision for his future.
His hard work paid off when he scored 20 points in his Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations. Even with these strong academic results, Tumusiime did not expect to be selected for the Equity Leaders Program.
Given the intense competition in Wakiso District, home to hundreds of high-performing schools and students, he believed his chances were slim. Then came another life-changing moment.
His mother received a phone call from Equity Bank informing her that her son had been selected among the district’s top-performing students to join the program. For the family, the news was overwhelming.
For Tumusiime, it was validation that hard work, discipline, and persistence can create opportunities regardless of one’s background.
Through the Equity Leaders Program, the bank is empowering bright but often disadvantaged youth through leadership development, mentorship, internship placements, university counselling, and exposure to global academic and professional opportunities.
Beyond academic support, the program is helping scholars build confidence, professionalism, discipline, and leadership capacity. Tumusiime says the program has fundamentally transformed how he views himself and his future.
“It helped me think beyond my environment and dream bigger,” he says.
Through mentorship and structured leadership training, he has learned to define his goals more clearly and prepare for a future where he can use technology to create solutions that positively impact society.
He also drew inspiration from remarks shared by Equity Bank Uganda Managing Director Gift Shoko during the induction.
“If you don’t know where you are going, every road will take you nowhere,” Shoko told the scholars.
Today, Tumusiime no longer views his circumstances as limitations. Instead, he sees challenges as stepping stones toward growth. Through programs such as the ELP, the bank is opening doors, nurturing talent, and helping shape a new generation of leaders.
