Govt to study Suhakam findings on Taiping Prison riot, says Fahmi

Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said Suhakam’s findings on the prison riot have not been discussed by the Cabinet yet.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will study Suhakam’s findings on the Taiping Prison riot that left one inmate dead before deciding on any further action, says government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is communications minister, said the matter was not discussed at Cabinet meetings. Nonetheless, he said Putrajaya was concerned by Suhakam’s findings.

“Usually, Suhakam’s annual report will be tabled in Parliament for debate, and we will study it.

“We are concerned about Suhakam’s findings. God willing, we will examine them before taking any action,” he told reporters after the Lembah Pantai Korban Perdana ceremony.

More than 100 Taiping prison inmates were assaulted by about 60 wardens during a transfer exercise from Hall B to Block E on Jan 17 last year. One detainee, Gan Chin Eng, died in the incident.

One warden has been charged with culpable homicide over Gan’s death, but Suhakam called for criminal charges to be filed against other wardens involved in the incident following its public inquiry.

This prompted DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo, who is also the digital minister, to demand answers from the inspector-general of police and attorney-general over the incident.

Earlier today, the prisons department said it would fully cooperate with the relevant authorities in examining Suhakam’s findings on the riot.
