Iran executes man involved in nationwide protests

ALBAWABA – Abbas Akbari was hanged this morning in Iran after being convicted of carrying out armed attacks on Iranian government buildings and police.

Abbas Akbari is the latest in the long list of people executed for political dissidence in Iran, following Mojtaba Khan who was executed on Sunday after being convicted of collaborating with the United States and Israel.

Abbas was described as being one of the “armed leaders” during the anti-government protests which peaked in January. According to the report, Abbas “opened fire in the street at security forces” and was one of the “armed leaders of the riots in Isfahan Province” where he was accused of attacking security establishments and health centers.

The judiciary condemned Akbari on charges of “Moharabeh” (waging war against God) and deliberate destruction of property “with the intent of confronting the system, disrupting public order and security, and assembly and collusion against national security.”

The Iranian Supreme Court upheld his sentence and he was executed Monday morning, making this the second execution for the second day of the week for the Iranian government. After China, Iran carries out the highest number of executions in the world according to rights groups including Amnesty International.
