Iraq to open Nasiriyah International Airport in a few months

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq is expected to inaugurate Nasiriyah International Airport in a few months in a step aiming to improve the country’s economic and tourism standing.

In a statement to the state-run news agency (INA) on Monday, Dhi Qar Governor Haitham al-Hamdani confirmed that the inauguration of the airport in the coming months will boost tourism in the province.

Al-Hamdani explained that the airport will help reduce transit times and will serve Iraq’s strategic project of the Development Road and several tourist attractions in the province, which are projected to draw over one million people each year.

The Iraqi government has selected the Chinese State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) as the project’s main contractor.

Last year, Al-Safi stated that the Iraqi Transport Ministry secured an agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a World Bank Group member, to establish strategic plans for the expansion and rehabilitation of Iraq’s airports.

The project includes renovating the 3,400-meter runway and 185,000-square-meter airport apron, as well as developing passenger buildings, a VIP building, a freight terminal, a 4-star hotel, and other administrative and navigation infrastructure.

Nasiriyah International Airport will have an initial capacity of 750,000 passengers per year. However, following a ten-year expansion plan, it will be enlarged to serve up to 2.5 million passengers annually.
