Man, 67, crushed under own Proton Saga after forgetting to engage handbrake in Batang Kali, police say

Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — An elderly man died after being hit by his own reversing car, in an incident believed to have occurred because he forgot to engage the handbrake after parking the vehicle at his residence in Batang Kali, Hulu Selangor, yesterday afternoon.

Hulu Selangor District Police Chief ACP Ibrahim Husin said they received a report regarding the incident involving the 67-year-old victim at 5.30pm.

“Initial investigations revealed that the accident occurred at 5.18 pm when the victim parked his vehicle inside his home garage before stepping out to close the gate.

“However, the vehicle suddenly reversed on its own and hit the victim, causing him to fall and become pinned underneath it,” he said in a statement last night.

Ibrahim said that preliminary findings suggest the victim is suspected to have failed to pull the vehicle’s handbrake, combined with the fact that the garage floor is sloped downwards towards the gate.

He said the victim was confirmed dead at the scene due to severe head injuries and was taken to the Kuala Kubu Baharu Hospital for an autopsy.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and members of the public with information regarding the incident are urged to come forward to assist with the investigation or contact investigating officer Insp Nurul Anati Zulkifli at 03 – 6064 1222.

Meanwhile, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department Operations Division Assistant Director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said his team assisted in extricating the victim, who was trapped under a Proton Saga car, after arriving at the scene at 5.43pm.

The operation involved five firefighters along with a Compact Fire Rescue Tender (CFRT) machine from the Bukit Sentosa Fire and Rescue Station before the operation was fully concluded at 6.05pm. — Bernama
