Mimi Lana braves the filth for ‘Polong’
“THERE was a stench coming from the rotten food,” says actress Mimi Lana on her gritty experience while filming the horror flick ‘Polong’ at an abandoned flat in Bukit Beruntung, Selangor.
In the movie, she portrays Fatima, who lives with her husband Mamat (played by Fad Anuar) in a dilapidated, filthy apartment.
“The first time I stepped into the flat, I wondered to myself, do people actually live in such filth?
“But once it was captured on camera, it actually looked visually striking,” Mimi noted.
She added that the chaotic and unkempt state in the flat was purposely created to enhance the film’s atmosphere.
“The actual house set was far more cluttered and dirty. The foul smell was definitely there because of the rotten food, which was left behind days earlier by the production crew members who built the set. We shot at the location for about three to four days,” she said.
“Perhaps they wanted us as actors to feel a heightened sense of realism. It certainly got my adrenaline pumping differently.”
However, the stomach-turning environment did little to dampen Mimi’s spirit, as she believes in being fully prepared for any role she takes on.
“It wasn’t entirely a terrible experience because I’ve been in much worse places before. As an actor, when you accept a role in a production, you have to embrace it and be fully prepared. There is no room for complaints,” she said.
The grim reality of the setting translates effectively on screen, with several scenes in the flat vividly capturing a home littered with cigarette butts, ash and decaying food.
Directed by Zulkarnain Azhar, ‘Polong’ is set to haunt cinemas nationwide from May 28.
The film also boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including June Lojong, Nadiya Nisaa, Namron, Riezman Khuzaimi and Amir Nafis.
