NUPRC unions end strike

Workers of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), under the aegis of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), have suspended the nationwide strike they embarked on Monday following an agreement with the commission’s management.

Daily Trust reports that the workers had commenced an indefinite strike over the alleged non-implementation of some welfare packages due to staff.

The industrial action led to the shutdown of the commission’s headquarters and disrupted administrative activities.

In a statement announcing the suspension of the strike, the Head of Media and Corporate Communications at NUPRC, Eniola Akinkuotu, said normal operations had resumed at the commission after the industrial action was called off on the night of June 1, 2026, following successful negotiations between the commission’s management and the two in-house unions.

According to him, the strike lasted for about 12 hours and affected only administrative operations, while regulatory activities at oil and gas facilities continued uninterrupted.

“The Commission therefore calls on members of the public to disregard false reports of disruptions to crude oil production, as well as misleading publications suggesting that the disagreement was centred on foreign training,” he said.

Akinkuotu added that the commission had pledged to improve the working environment for its employees and prioritise staff development in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act.
