Pandav-Era Kambareshwar Temple Emerges From Bhatghar Dam Waters In Pune

The historic Kambareshwar Temple has re-emerged from the waters of the British-era Bhatghar Dam in Pune’s Bhor taluka today, as water storage levels in the reservoir have declined.

Located in Kambare village, the centuries-old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva typically remains submerged under water for nearly eight months every year after the dam’s water level rises during the monsoon.

The rare sight of the centuries-old temple has started attracting devotees and tourists eager to witness its beauty and the scenic views of the Velvandi river basin during sunrise and sunset.

Historians and locals believe the temple dates back to the Pandava era from the epic Mahabharat, making it a significant archaeological and religious site.

The structure is known for its resilient stone architecture and features an underwater Shiva lingam that has withstood decades of submersion.

The unique aspect of the temple is that the Shiva temple is completely submerged in the river throughout the year and the temple spire is visible only during the summer, when the river dries up.

The temple usually becomes visible again in May when the reservoir water recedes. For approximately ten out of twelve months annually, the sacred structure remains hidden beneath the dam’s waters, only to reveal itself during the driest period of the year.

Following the temple’s reappearance, villagers and the gram panchayat carried out a cleaning drive and organised traditional religious rituals before reopening the temple for devotees.

Situated around 35 kilometres from Bhor town in the Bhatghar Dam region, the temple has become a focal point for historical researchers, practitioners, and ordinary citizens who flock to this remarkable site every summer.

The British-era dam was built on the Valavandi river, 18 kilometres from Bhor, and has preserved this ancient temple in its backwaters for decades.
