Panvel Municipal Corporation Plans Dedicated Electric Bus Network Across Expanding City

Panvel is set to get its own municipal public transport network, with the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) completing a detailed feasibility study for a dedicated city bus service across the rapidly growing urban region.

According to a Free Press Journal report, the study carried out by the Urban Mass Transit Corporation (UMTC) evaluated travel patterns, passenger demand, operational viability and existing connectivity gaps across PMC’s 110 sq km municipal area.

Officials said the final project report is expected shortly and will form the basis for the proposed rollout of the city’s first dedicated municipal transport service.

At present, residents largely depend on transport systems operated by neighbouring civic bodies such as Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport and KDMC, along with suburban railways, autorickshaws and app-based mobility services.

However, rapid urban expansion, rising residential development and increasing daily travel demand have intensified pressure for a standalone transport network tailored specifically for Panvel.

As part of the assessment, UMTC mapped commuter movement across both older Panvel areas and newer CIDCO-developed nodes. Peak-hour traffic flow, underserved routes and last-mile connectivity gaps were also studied in detail.

Officials indicated that electric buses are likely to form the backbone of the proposed fleet as the corporation looks to align the project with broader sustainable urban mobility goals and cleaner public transport initiatives.

The report also examines staffing patterns, operational expenditure and possible management structures, including whether the service should be run directly by the civic body or through a private operator under an outsourced model.

“UMTC has completed the survey related to the proposed transport service. A detailed project report will soon be submitted. After it is placed before the general body, it will be sent to the state government for approval,” Kailas Gavade, transport manager of the corporation was quoted as saying in the report.
