Popular UK holiday company offers to reimburse guest travel costs amid fuel crisis

As conflict continues in the Middle East, not only are airlines contending with the fuel crisis, but drivers are struggling at the pumps, too.

Last week, RAC statistics revealed that the average price paid for unleaded petrol rose to its highest level since the war began, at 158.52p per litre — and over the coming weeks, it could climb to 160p.

It’s a concern for families who are opting for staycations this year, as spiralling fuel costs now need to be considered in the summer holiday budget.

But now, one UK holiday company has stepped in, offering to help worried guests by reimbursing them for petrol.

Hoseasons manages more than 750 UK-based holiday parks, with locations spanning Cornwall, Norfolk, the Lake District, and the Scottish Highlands, all popular summer holiday spots.

For bookings made between May 20 and August 30, the company’s new Fuel Cover policy will enable customers to claim back up to £75 towards the cost of their journey.

Bookings will need to be made over the phone, using the code ‘FUEL75,’ with getaways planned before September 30.

Simon Altham, chief operating officer for Hoseasons, said: ‘We know rising travel costs are becoming a bigger consideration for many holidaymakers this summer. Fuel, in particular, can quickly add to the overall cost of a trip, especially for families travelling during peak holiday periods.

‘That’s why we wanted to help ease some of that pressure and support people continuing to take the UK breaks they were already planning.’

The launch of the new policy comes as the brand commissioned new research into rising holiday costs, which concluded that as many as 15.4 million Brits have changed their holiday plans this year for this reason.

Of the 2,000 adults polled, nearly six in 10 admitted that the hidden costs of getting away, including travel and fuel, were the main elements holding them back, while 7.6 million (27%) said they’d actively travel a shorter distance to enjoy a UK-based getaway instead this summer.

With those travelling by car anticipating an average spend of £68 on fuel alone, rising costs are increasingly pushing holidaymakers exclusively towards UK-based destinations.

The research shows that 28% of travellers are now more likely to stay on home shores rather than jet off overseas, with a further 26% setting a smaller budget for their trip.

Elsewhere in the world of travel, passengers are being hit with more cancelled flights and higher costs.

Carriers around the world are scrapping routes and rolling out extra charges to manage soaring fuel prices driven by the war on Iran and the resulting closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait, which has effectively been blocked by Iran since February, handles approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply.

Several airlines have reduced schedules, while others have hiked fares and baggage fees. One UK airline has even shut down.

Ascend Airways, which mainly operated from Gatwick and Stansted, cancelled flights and pulled its entire fleet from operation, while British Airways’ parent company IAG warned its profits will be hit as it expects to spend about €2bn (£1.72bn) more than planned on fuel this year.
