Post-mortem on 3 victims of offshore lifeboat tragedy today
KUALA TERENGGANU: Post-mortem on three workers killed after a lifeboat plunged into the sea at Platform Sepat, off Terengganu/Kelantan waters, will be conducted at 8.30am today.
The victims were identified as Ahmad Fiqri Zakaria, 38, from Taman Merdeka, Batu Berendam, Melaka; Muhammad Faezuan Hakim Mohammad Bustamam, 28, from Jalan Kampung Jawa, Kuantan; and Nik Muhammad Hafifi Asri Ab Majid, 37, from Bandar Indera Mahkota, Kuantan.
Another victim, Mohd Taufik Mohd Ruslan, 37, from Banting, Selangor, sustained serious injuries, including fractures, and is receiving treatment at Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) here.
Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the case has been classified as sudden death.
The incident occurred at about 12.50pm when the four men boarded a lifeboat on the platform to descend to the sea for maintenance work beneath the structure.
“The rope or hook attached to the boat is believed to have detached suddenly.
“The boat, along with all victims, fell into the sea,” he said when contacted.
Rescuers later brought the victims back onto the platform before they were airlifted to Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Nerus at about 4pm and rushed to HSNZ.
Three were pronounced dead while one sustained serious injuries.
