Readers respond: Redistricting returning us to inequality
Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address in the middle of the Civil War reminded Americans of the country’s founders, who described a new nation “conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” Though Confederate states had seceded to preserve the practice of slavery, Lincoln said the country must honor the Union dead by ensuring that “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
