Record-breaker Afiq extends JDT stay until 2028
KUALA LUMPUR: Midfielder Afiq Fazail has committed his future to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) with a new two-year contract extension, keeping him with the Southern Tigers until 2028.
“JDT player Afiq has extended his contract for another two seasons,” the club announced through its official social media pages, two days after JDT won its fourth straight Malaysia Cup.
Since his debut for JDT in January 2017, Afiq has become a cornerstone of the squad.
Across domestic, Asean and Asian competitions this season, he made 43 appearances, clocking 2,777 minutes of action in the 2025-2026 campaign.
Afiq now ranks as one of the team’s most-capped players of the modern era, having featured regularly over nearly a decade.
While all-time statistics show several JDT legends with high appearance totals, the 32-year-old’s longevity and importance to the squad are undeniable.
“Afiq made his 272nd appearance during JDT’s match against Kuching City in the 2025-2026 Malaysia Cup final, surpassing Safiq Rahim’s record of 270 appearances,” the club said.
“He also created history as the first JDT player to play in seven Malaysia Cup finals since 2017.”
