Shah Alam Seksyen 7 is a food hunt waiting to happen

SHAH ALAM: Though it might be one of Klang Valley’s biggest cities, driving into Shah Alam somehow feels like entering another state, with its abundance of Malay eateries and roadside food spots.

Even the atmosphere here feels a little more laid-back, a welcome break from the usual chaos of Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. That is exactly what makes Shah Alam great for aimless food hunts.

One place worth checking out is Seksyen 7, right outside UiTM Shah Alam. Being near a university means the area is packed with so many eateries that eating through them all could easily become a weeks-long mission.

First on your list should be ayam gepuk. Seksyen 7 feels like ayam gepuk haven, with a spot popping up around almost every corner – good news if crispy fried chicken, spicy sambal, and peanut sauce sound like your kind of meal.

The bright orange walls of “Ayam Gepuk Jogja” already hints at what is coming. Go for Set D, which comes with tempe, fried innards, and the all-important fried cabbage.

You can pick your sambal spice level too, which is helpful if your spice tolerance needs a little mercy. The sambal is fragrant and flavourful, while the peanut sauce ties everything together.

Unsurprisingly, the fried cabbage steals the spotlight, with its crispy edges and slightly sweet flavour making it oddly addictive. Feeling brave? Add on the sambal ijo, a green chilli sambal with smoky flavours and a gentle kick.

After all that heat, cool down at “Hulu Cafe i-City”, a cosy spot dedicated to matcha and specialty coffee.

One pastry worth ordering here is the Rikyu Matcha Noir Croissant. With its jet-black appearance, it certainly stands out.

Bite into it and you get buttery, flaky layers with a slight sweetness, followed by a generous burst of matcha cream made using Rikyu matcha from Kyoto, Japan.

For something lighter, try their Ichigo Matcha Misu. Strawberry and matcha make a surprisingly good pair here in this icy drink, with the fruity notes blending nicely with the cream topping. The matcha flavour is fairly mild.

The Matcha Coconut Latte is another refreshing option. Coconut takes the lead while the matcha quietly lingers in the background. The result is light, cooling, and easy to enjoy after all that spicy sambal.

And before heading home, make one final stop at “Karipap Donat Malaya”, parked along a lively stretch beside a man-made lake. The roadside scene itself feels like a mini food adventure, with other trucks selling everything from apam balik to local coffee and snacks.

The curry puffs here are made fresh on the spot, which means they arrive piping hot every single time.

You can choose between potato or sardine fillings, and honestly, it is hard to go wrong with either. Both are generously packed and loaded with flavour, wrapped in a buttery pastry shell that shatters beautifully with each bite.

The doughnuts keep things simple with their soft, milky texture and no-frills charm.

By the end of the day, Shah Alam’s Seksyen 7 proves that sometimes the best food adventures do not require fancy restaurants or carefully planned itineraries.

All you really need is a car, a healthy appetite, and enough room in your stomach for “just one more stop”.
