Six Argentines through and one out in Roland Garros 2026

Six Argentine tennis players are through to the Roland Garros 2026 second round, after the tournament set off on Sunday.

The second tennis major of the season saw wins for Marco Trungelliti, Thiago Tirante, Francisco Cerúndolo, Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Mariano Navone in the men’s singles and Solana Sierra in the women’s.

Tomas Etcheverry, the top-ranked Argentine in the men’s rankings, is the only Argentine ousted so far.

The top-ranked Argentine remaining in the tournament — 26th in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings — Cerúndolo secured a hard-fought victory over Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (55) by 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (9), 6-4 on Monday. He’ll face France’s Hugo Gaston (118) on Thursday.

Navone (38), who’s fresh off reaching the Geneva Open final the previous week, confirmed his good form by beating United States player Jenson Brooksby by 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 36 minutes.

The player from 9 de Julio in the Buenos Aires province will need all his talents to beat the young Czech star Jakub Mensik (27) on Wednesday.

Argentine tennis continued on a high note with Camilo Ugo Carabelli (59), who defeated U.S. player Emilio Nava (94) 7-6 (10), 6-3, 6-3. It was a special win for Carabelli, who ended a four-year drought without a win in the main draw of a Grand Slam.

His next opponent will be Russia’s Andrey Rublev, the World’s No.13.

Etcheverry out

It wasn’t a great start for Argentine tennis at the French Open, as Etcheverry fell 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to Portugal’s Nuno Borges.

The La Plata player struggled to find his footing throughout the game and had a torrid time against the Portuguese, who had also knocked him out in Barcelona and Auckland.

Trugelliti (81) was the first Argentine to score a win. The player from Santiago del Estero beat Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet (147) 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, in a 1-hour and 45-minute match. He’ll now face a tough challenge against Russia’s Karen Khachanov (15) on Wednesday.

Tirante had a much tougher challenge, having to battle for three and a half hours against Spain’s Pablo Llamas Ruiz (122). He took the win 6-3, 7-6 (6), 6-7, 6-0. Next, he’ll face off against another Spaniard, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (23).

Sierra through to the second round

In the women’s draw, Solana Sierra — the only Argentine competing — secured her first French Open victory after losing in the first round in 2025. In an unexpected win, she defeated Britain’s Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, 6-0, 7-6(4).

The Mar del Plata player, ranked No. 68 in the rankings of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), will face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, the World No. 13 seed and a finalist in Paris two years ago.
