Special Branch officer fined RM10,000 for receiving cash
PETALING JAYA: A Special Branch officer was fined RM10,000 by the Kuala Terengganu sessions court for receiving cash from a man to assist in bringing the latter’s son home from Syria using unofficial channels.
Nazli Mohamed was slapped with five charges of receiving RM10,500 without consideration from Zaid Jusoh between May 22 and Dec 29, 2018 in Besut.
The offence under Section 165 of the Penal Code is punishable by up to two years’ jail, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Judge Azhar Othman ruled that Nazli failed to raise a reasonable doubt regarding his five charges.
The judge also found that Nazli fabricated stories about having an informant in Syria and travelling to Turkey to bring Zaid’s son home.
The son had left home in 2015.
“The accused took advantage of a desperate family (which wanted their son home) and the father believed him wholeheartedly,” Azhar said.
The court rejected Nazli’s defence that the RM10,500 from Zaid was for “health supplements” and “loans” as no supporting documents were tendered to support these claims.
Azhar imposed a RM10,000 fine, or nine months in prison in default, as Nazli was a first-time offender and had been suspended from duty since 2020.
He added that the Special Branch officer would be having his third child soon.
