Teen killed, 6 injured in chain crash after car hits monitor lizard
PEKAN: A 14-year-old boy was killed and six others injured in a three-vehicle crash triggered after a car ran over a monitor lizard and lost control at Km90 of Jalan Kuantan–Segamat here today.
Muhammad Akmal Danial Mohd Faidhie died at the scene in the 1am accident, which involved a Proton Saga, a Perodua Axia and a Perodua Alza, each carrying four occupants.
Pekan police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Mat Zin said the Saga, carrying the victim and three others including his uncle, was travelling from Kuantan towards Muadzam Shah, while the other two vehicles were heading in the opposite direction.
He said investigations showed the Axia, driven by a 25-year-old woman with three passengers, lost control after running over a monitor lizard and entered the opposing lane.
“The Saga, driven by the victim’s uncle, attempted to avoid the Axia and swerved into the opposite lane before colliding with the oncoming Alza,” he said in a statement.
Zaidi said Akmal Danial, who was seated in the rear seat, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
He said two Axia occupants, including the driver, were injured, while the Alza driver sustained minor injuries.
All injured victims were taken to Muadzam Shah Hospital for treatment.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing death.
