Teen’s body found at riverbed, search for younger brother continues
DUNGUN: The body of 15-year-old Muhammad Amir Ashraf Mohd Zul-Zunaidi, who was feared drowned while bathing with his younger brother in Sungai Kampung Beril near Paka, was found this evening.
Acting district police chief Deputy Superintendent Jumaidy Bah Chong Weh said the body was recovered by the Chukai Fire and Rescue Department’s water rescue team at 3.47pm.
He said the victim was found at the bottom of the river, about 5.1m deep and roughly 7m from where he was last seen.
“The body has been sent to the Dungun Hospital forensic unit for further investigation,” he said, adding that search efforts were continuing for the victim’s younger brother, 14-year-old Muhammad Aidil Amsyar Mohd Zul-Zunaidi.
Jumaidy said a search and rescue operation involving 37 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, police and villagers was launched immediately after authorities received reports of the incident.
In the 10.56am incident, the two brothers were believed to have been swept away by strong currents while bathing in the river with two friends, aged 14 and 15, who survived the incident.
