Traditional ruler moves to avert farmers-herders clashes in Abuja community

The chief of Pai chiefdom in Kwali Area Council of the FCT, Alhaji Abubakar Alhassan Pai, said the palace is set to inaugurate a committee on grazing routes for cows and other livestock to avert clashes between farmers and herders in the area.

Alhaji Pai disclosed this while receiving traditional title holders, tribal chiefs, Fulani leaders, Ardos, and other community leaders who paid him Eid-el-Kabir homage at his palace on Thursday.

He said the move had become necessary because disputes over grazing routes had remained a major cause of conflicts between farmers and herders, adding that the initiative would promote peaceful coexistence and tolerance across the chiefdom.

“At least, creating grazing routes for herders to move their cows freely for grazing without straying into farmlands to destroy crops will ensure peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders,” he said.

The traditional ruler stated that although farmers-herders clashes could not be completely eliminated, the chiefdom had succeeded in reducing such incidents by about 70 per cent.

He also called on Fulani chiefs and Ardos to caution their kinsmen against allowing underage herders to take cows out for grazing, noting that such situations often lead to cattle straying into farms and destroying crops.
