‘Vampire killer’ appears in court facing murder charge
A 34-year-old Harare man accused of luring a friend to his death before dumping his body in a pit appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo facing a murder charge.
Sherpard Severa of Warren Park D was not asked to plead to murder charges when he appeared in court this Friday following his arrest Tuesday.
Prosecutors allege that on May 19 at around 3:31am, Severa lured 28-year-old Brian Nandana to Pfukwa Shopping Centre in Warren Park D under the pretext that he wanted to give him some money.
“The accused person lured the now deceased Brian Nandana to Pfukwa Shopping Centre Warren Park D, Harare as if he wanted to give him some money,” the State alleges.
According to court papers, Severa allegedly entered Nandana’s vehicle before strangling him to death, later cutting his throat with a knife and sucking his blood.
The State further alleges that after the killing, Severa drove to Warren Park Hills cemetery area where he allegedly concealed the body in a gravel pit and covered it with stones.
Court papers state that as Severa was returning to where the vehicle had been parked, he allegedly encountered Ronnie Tumbare and security guards who were guarding earth-moving equipment in the area, prompting him to flee from the scene.
Police investigations allegedly linked Severa to the crime after detectives recovered the deceased’s iPhone 12 cellphone at the scene.
“The police went through deceased’s cellphone… and saw conversation of the accused person luring the now deceased to Warren Park D,” the State alleges.
The court heard that detectives later tracked down and arrested Severa, who allegedly led police to the recovery of Nandana’s body.
Prosecutors further allege that Severa led investigators to the recovery of the deceased’s car keys from a bin at his residence.
Among the evidence outlined by the State are alleged text messages exchanged before the killing, recovery indications made by the accused and witness testimony expected during trial.
Severa was remanded in custody to June 8.
