Namibians encouraged to venture into pig farming

Namibians are being encouraged to enter the pig farming business.

A young German intern working at the piggery of agriculturalist Winni Metzger at Kanyikama village in the Kavango West region says pig farming is a good business and she would like to see many Namibians venturing into it.

Eideen Ohlendorf made this call on Thursday, while a total of 21 pig carcasses bought by African Meat Supplies from Metzger’s butchery were being off-loaded into the company’s truck.

“Pig farming is a good business where people can make a lot of money and I don’t know why many Namibians are not strongly venturing into this business,” Ohlendorf told The Namibian.

She said in Germany, where she comes from, farming with pigs is a good business.

But she was quick to add that for one to make a good income out of pig farming, pigs have to be given good food that will allow them to grow faster. She said some of the feed for pigs that helps them to have energy and vitamins are maize, wheat, soya and cut grass to fill up their stomachs.

“You also need to give them limestone, vitamins and amino acid because this is good for metabolism,” said Ohlendorf.

Israel Ekandjo, who is also a young intern at Metzger’s piggery, said they currently have a total number of 370 pigs, and one pregnant sow can give them up to 18 piglets.
