Silent Hill 2 devs tease mystery Switch horror game you can’t ‘replicate’ on PS5

The developers behind the Silent Hill 2 remake want to start a new horror chapter for Nintendo, as they tease their unannounced Switch exclusive. 

While Cronos: The New Dawn didn’t exactly set our world alight, there’s more interest around Bloober Team’s future following the team’s excellent Silent Hill 2 remake. 

The Polish developer currently has several projects in development: a remake of the original Silent Hill and a mysterious title codenamed Project M. The latter was confirmed in July 2024, and was described as having a ‘significantly smaller’ budget than its other titles. 

It’s unclear if the title is a Switch 2 exclusive, but it is certainly being built for Nintendo platforms. Last year, Bloober Team said the game would please fans of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Limbo, and Eternal Darkness, while sporting a ‘bold twist’ not explored in a horror game before. 

It’s all sounding too good to be true, and now Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno has – in a roundabout way – gassed up the project even more in a LinkedIn post, asking people what they believe the Switch 2 can do for horror games over other platforms. 

‘I have a question that’s been on my mind for quite a while,’ Babieno begins. ‘What could Nintendo Switch 2 do for horror games in a way that PC, PlayStation or Xbox simply wouldn’t be able to replicate in quite the same way?

‘I’m not even talking about raw power or graphics. More about how the platform itself can influence experience design: immersion, tension, player behaviour, portability, console features, controllers, the feeling of ‘closeness’ with the game, or even completely different approaches to building atmosphere. What kind of horror game design would you personally love to see here?’

Babieno goes on to note how he ‘always appreciated’ how Nintendo platforms ‘often inspire design decisions you probably wouldn’t make anywhere else’. 

‘Honestly, that’s what excites me the most,’ he added. ‘I’m not asking how to make horror more casual or ‘safer’. Quite the opposite – how to create something uniquely ‘Nintendo’, while still remaining dark, disturbing and fully horror-driven.

‘I already have my own thoughts, but I’m genuinely curious about yours. Of course — there’s always a chance we’re already working on something similar, so if you’re afraid of sharing your idea publicly… maybe keep the best ones to yourself.’

In an interview with The Game Business, the studio said how it hopes to make Nintendo a place where horror can thrive – between Project M and the Switch 2 port of Cronos: The New Dawn. 

‘I’m trying to make my personal dreams come true,’ Babieno told the outlet. ‘I am a huge Nintendo fan. I grew up with Nintendo consoles. The most important horrors, like Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 4… were available on Nintendo GameCube. 

‘It was a gold time for Nintendo fans. In some ways, we would like to be the one to open a new chapter for Nintendo right now.’

He added: ‘We have some plans. We are not able to share our vision for the future yet. But definitely Nintendo fans could take a look at Bloober Team.’

If it does utilise the Switch hardware in unique ways, it certainly sounds like a more experimental horror game than what the studio is known for, with its past titles including The Medium, Blair Witch, and Layers Of Fear. 

As for when we could see this title, the next likely candidate is the rumoured Nintendo Direct for June.
